CelPlan Technologies Developing an Energy Efficiency Implementation Plan for Passenger Rail Systems in Brazil

4/18/2022 –

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has awarded a grant to the Brazilian National Association of Passenger Rail Operators (ANPTrilhos) to develop an energy efficiency implementation plan for passenger rail systems in Brazil. CelPlan Technologies has been selected by ANPTrilhos to provide expert consulting services and perform the technical assistance for this crucial project. CelPlan is joined in this effort by Systra Brazil and Sinapsis.

The initiative addresses the pressing issue of rising energy costs in Brazilian passenger rail systems, where energy consumption represents the second-highest operational cost. By focusing on reducing these costs and improving overall energy efficiency, the project seeks to enhance the sustainability and affordability of rail transportation in Brazil.

CelPlan Technologies will lead a comprehensive assessment of the current rail system, evaluating staff capabilities, equipment, infrastructure, facilities, and services. The company will also recommend policies, standards, and best practices for energy reduction measures. The study will assess primary energy consumption drivers, including rail vehicles, propulsion systems, auxiliary power systems, operations, and facilities such as maintenance depots, rail yards, and stations.

Among the potential solutions to be considered are energy-efficient technologies including energy storage, power regeneration, and automation software. These innovations have the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption and operational costs.

The long-term benefits of this project extend beyond immediate cost savings. As passenger rail networks continue to expand in Brazil, this initiative aims to support operational efficiency and sustainability, ensuring that growth is balanced with environmental responsibility.

The results of this technical assistance, led by CelPlan Technologies, are expected to inform future procurement plans for energy-efficient solutions by individual Brazilian rail operators, potentially leading to significant investments in modern, sustainable rail technology.
